Dr. Arlyn Roffman

Dr. Arlyn Roffman Ph.D., Developmental Psychology from Boston College, M.Ed. in Learning Disabilities from Lesley University, Professor of Special Education in Lesley University, 29 Everett St., Cambridge, USA.

Dr. Arlyn Roffman has been working in the field of learning disabilities since 1969, beginning her career as a special education teacher at a time when that role was rapidly evolving in the US. After earning her master’s degree in Learning Disabilities and doctorate in Developmental Psychology, she became a Professor of Special Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she has been on the faculty since 1976. For 15 of those years, Arlyn served as the founding director of Lesley’s Threshold Program (http://www.lesley.edu/threshold), the first comprehensive university-based, non-degree transition program in the US for young adults with disabilities. Threshold continues to thrive and is now in its 30th year.

In addition to her work at Lesley, Arlyn has a private practice focusing on the adjustment of youth and adults with LD and other disabilities. She has focused much of her career on the social/emotional effects of LD and on the transition of youth with disabilities from school to adult life. Dr. Roffman is an active consultant to schools, families, and organizations and is a frequent speaker throughout the US and abroad on disability-related topics like those covered in this conference. Recent presentation titles include, “Life with an LD Spouse“, “What You Can Do At Home to Help Your Teen Prepare for Adulthood”, “They Don’t All Go To College: Preparing Teens with LD for Work and Community Living“, “Social Skills: A Key for Transition” and “Self-Determination 101: Nuts and Bolts of Developing Independence and Self-Advocacy.” The author of 3 books - most recently Guiding Teens with Learning Disabilities: Navigating the Transition from High School to Adulthood (Random House, 2007) - Arlyn has also written numerous articles and chapters on learning disabilities and ADHD.  She has been interviewed on the radio and on television and has been an “Ask the Expert” on several websites, most recently for CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder). The transcript of that chat, entitled “When Traditional College is Not the Answer: Other Avenues for Young Adults” appears in September’s 2011 back-to-school edition of CHADD’s Attention magazine.

In 2011 Dr. Roffman received the LDA Award, the highest honor of the Learning Disabilities Association of America, in recognition and appreciation of outstanding leadership, support and dedication in the field of learning disabilities. In giving this award, LDA president, Pat Lillie stated, “Through her speaking, teaching, consulting, and her writing, her work in transitions has helped build bridges to more successful and fulfilling futures for thousands of students, and in doing so has brought peace of mind to their parents.” Arlyn serves on the professional advisory board of LDA, has been on the boards of the National Center for Learning Disabilities the National Adult Literacy and Learning Disability Center and several other US organizations, and has been on the editorial review committees of Learning Disabilities Research and Practice and Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability. This will be her first visit to Dubai, and she is most enthusiastic about the opportunity for professional sharing with conference participants.
